Abstract

In this study, the effect of root relief modification on the dynamic behavior of the gear mechanism was investigated. Since this type of modification is applied to the critical region of the gear tooth, there is limited information in the literature. Compared to pinion, gears are overdesigned. In the study, a modification was applied only on the gear wheel and it was aimed to make the gear pair more flexible. Thus, softening dynamic behavior of the tooth pair, without a marginal change in the stress magnitudes, could be achieved. A computer program was used for the analyses. The program has the capacity to determine gear spring characteristics and load sharing along the contact line. It is also capable of calculating static and dynamic stresses. Since the modification was performed in a critical region of the gear profile, first the application limits were investigated and added to the model parametrically. In this way, the results of the load sharing, static stress values, and dynamic factor load factor (KV) values depending on the peripheral velocity for the sample mechanism were compiled and presented as graphics. The model was also structured to include the premature contact phenomenon known as off line of contact. In the result graphs, the case of taking this effect into account is also represented.
