Abstract

Multi-car elevator systems are an important new technology that can have a large economical impact on high-rise buildings. Multi-car elevators can be realized efficiently by linear motors, which are also useful for other tasks besides propulsion. We report on theoretical and experimental results concerning the use of linear motor stator windings as the actuator of the safety and brake system of the elevators. We have found that this method allows the economical construction of the elevator safety system.
