Abstract

The leaching behaviour of Eraring Power Station (NSW) fly ash was investigated as a part of a research project undertaken by the University of Technology, Sydney. The aim of the project is to utilise the fly ash as stabilised pavement base material. In order to examine the adverse effects of the leaching of this material on the environment, unstabilised and lime stabilised samples were prepared and tested using a column apparatus according to the ASTM test method (ASTM D 4874 1996). Concentrations of 14 toxic and undesirable chemicals, as well as pH in the leachate effluent, were analysed. It was concluded that the Eraring fly ash does not present a hazard when used as a pavement base material.
