Abstract
A pitching and plunging flat plate with an aspect ratio of 8 is used as a gust generator. For periodic vortex gusts it is in feathering conditions and a NACA0012 wing with an aspect ratio of 6 is placed downstream. For the single vortex encounter, the gust generator plate undergoes a clockwise half rotation and a rectangular flat plate wing with an aspect ratio of 4 is placed downstream. Direct force/moment measurements in conjunction with simultaneous DPIV measurements are acquired in order to determine the performance of the wing under large scale spanwise periodic vortex gust or when a large scale, single spanwise vortex impinges on. Corresponding flow structure interactions and the effect of vortex gust on wing loading are studied. The force variations in time are self-similar and are dictated by the variation of effective angle of attack measured upstream of the leading edge.
