Abstract
In electrical engineering, the K-factor is a key rating that determines how well a transformer can handle nonlinear loads, such as computers, LED lighting, and variable frequency drives. These loads can generate harmonic currents that lead to overheating and other operational issues. This study presents a comparative analysis of costs and weights associated with transformers featuring different K-factor values - specifically 1, 4, and 13. By exploring these ratings, which reflect a transformer's capacity to manage nonlinear loads, we aim to clarify the relationship between K-factor values and transformer pricing. The findings are intended to assist customers and power system designers in making informed decisions regarding transformer selection based on specific requirements. This research offers valuable insights for transformer designers, facilitating comparisons of price and weight among transformers with varying K-factors, thereby enhancing design effectiveness and practical application.
