Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new way of probing as a means of conducting remote research, with a particular focus on utilising social media platforms. To achieve this goal, we draw on previous research involving both tangible and technology-integrated probes to identify specific requirements and opportunities for implementing cultural probes through repurposing Instagram. Remarkably, we find that this new way of probing, which we name ‘InstantProbes’, corresponds well to many aspects of the cultural probes method while enhancing researcher–participant interaction. Based on three different case studies and an analysis on the method’s advantages and shortcomings, we develop a guide on how to apply InstantProbes, proposing a new way of probing.
