Abstract

Monitoring surface deformations induced from mining activities and taking measures against the deformations is a statutory necessity. Conventional long term monitoring techniques are insufficient due to unfavorable factors such as topographic structure and flora of the observation, urbanization rate, and time delays in obtaining results. Therefore, in recent years, the methods, allowing to determine the surface deformations and movements using satellite data without requiring any prior knowledge especially in large areas, have begun to come to the fore. InSAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry), one of these methods, is very important for analyzing and giving useful and fast results of slope displacement and subsidence by evaluating the data periodically received from satellites within short periods of time both of day and night in all weather conditions. In this study, displacements at the benches of a Lignite Open Pit which have an interruption in production due to slope failures were observed periodically with InSAR data and deformation velocity maps were obtained from InSAR. Deformation velocity maps were evaluated together with manufacturing maps. It is understood that the analysis of InSAR velocity map can be considered as a pre-warning method since it allows the detection of potential slope failure zones.
