Abstract

The effort to find new sources of energy became a challenge for all scientific and technological areas in the world. Use of renewable resources in distributed generation is one of the considerable options for the increasing energy demand. Conventional energy systems transform into Smart Grid concept by the integration of innovative smart energy devices with the conventional electricity grid infrastructure. Smart meters, as being one of the upcoming technologies of Smart Grid, have become popular since Distribution Network Operators prefer to apply Time-of-Use rates. These devices need economical and reliable communication system. Power Line Communication (PLC) has several advantages for achieving it. In this study it is aimed to improve narrowband Power Line Communication system performance by noise measurement and analysis, while at the same time contributing to the planning process of Frequency Shift Keying applications in Turkey. Different types of impulsive noise sources were selected. Between these selected impulsive noise sources, a solar grid tie micro inverter is particularly focused on. Because there is limited noise measurement campaigns exist related to it. Measurements were carried out using Data Acquisition card. Data recorded and analyzed using a digital signal processing program. Each of these loads' probability density function and cumulative distribution function expressions were given. Results were discussed according to allowed maximum disturbance levels. Between these noise sources solar power inverter produced higher noise amplitude in the whole frequency range. Except solar inverter, Frequency Shift Keying appeared applicable some carrier frequencies.
