Hardware Implementation of a Hippocampus Model for Navigation

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

The hippocampus is one of the brain regions responsible for navigation. Thus, some computational models of the hippocampus focus on foraging and place learning tasks, leading to new approaches in robotics. Here, a hippocampus model composed of leaky integrate-and-fire neurons is considered. Although the model has been proposed in an earlier work, for robotic applications, a hardware realization of the hippocampus model is beneficial and has not been realized previously. The novelty of this work is building an improved spiking neural network in MATLAB Simulink and compiled to run on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), with some hardware-oriented changes.
