Abstract
A smart voltage and reactive power control method is proposed that focuses on reducing energy cost and distribution losses for the next day while ensuring safe and uninterrupted energy supply to consumers in distribution networks with dispersed and multiple photovoltaic solar systems. Within the scope of the study, it is considered that all photovoltaic solar systems in the network are operated as STATCOM (PVSTATCOM) which has been recently proposed. Determining the optimal reactive power scheduling of all PV-STATCOMs has been achieved by applying a Modified Lévy flight-based Firefly Algorithm which was developed with modifications made in the Firefly Algorithm. The validity and applicability of the proposed method was tested on a MV distribution network in Istanbul/Turkey. Simulation results show that application of the proposed method offers opportunity to Distribution System Operators (DSO) for a great cost savings and loss reduction without compromising voltage statutory limits.
