FLOW AND TURBULENT CHARACTERISTIC OVER SPILLWAYS SLAB GAPS

Abstract

Hydraulic structures such as spillways, stilling basins, pressurized bottom outlets, etc. are exerted by high hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces. The interaction between flow and the bottom surface is critical for stability. One of the most important threats against their stability is the uncertainty at the bottom, which comes from slab junctions. The interaction between the main flow over the slabs and the water in the gap between the slabs is investigated in this study. Gap width, flow conditions taking into consideration, and main flow to gap relation observed with PIV measurements near the bottom over/in gap. Vortex formation between the holes was determined, and its effects were discussed.
