Abstract

In this study, a technique for extraction of high reflectance regions from synthetic aperture radar images is presented. ERS-2 amplitude images which are reconstructed via wide focusing algorithm for Istanbul, Turkey are used. During t he study, a statistical point of view is considered. High reflectance regions are detected by comparing the threshold value and the local means of sites which are calculated by a 3x3 sliding window. As a result of the study, high reflectance areas which are determined via given approach for the ERS-2 image of Bosphom, Istanbul, Turkey are clearly visible. Parameters such as total mean and total standard deviation of the image that are needed for the extraction process are given, and histogram of the image is plotted. Wide focus algorithm which is used for the reconstruction of the image is also presented.
