Abstract

A soft-story in a multi-story building may cause excessive displacement, when it is subjected to a severe ground motion. To prevent this effect on the soft story, this paper proposes a displacement controller device with a forcedisplacement relationship of hardening type hysteresis. Moreover, an energy-based damper design method, which assumes a uniform inter-story displacement distribution, is proposed to determine the necessary viscous damping coefficient. The results show that, seismic displacement response of the multi story structure can be effectively reduced under the target inter-story displacement value, with the use of viscous damping coefficient which is obtained by the proposed method.
