Abstract

In this study, it is demonstrated that North East Down (NED) azimuth and elevation angles can be estimated in electronic warfare systems that only measure the body azimuth angle by using platform maneuvers. Rotations are first derived from measurements taken when the platform is either stationary or undergoing roll or pitch maneuvers. The intersection point of these rotations corresponds to the target's true NED azimuth and elevation angles. We propose methods based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) to solve two distinct cost functions for estimating this angle pair. Quantitative analysis shows that both methods provide highly accurate estimates of the desired angle pair.
