Abstract

As a result of the rapid growth of the electric vehicle market, electric buses (EBs) have started to play a critical role in the sustainable transportation goal by reducing urban carbon emissions. Therefore, accurate energy consumption estimates for EBs are of great importance in terms of optimizing charging infrastructure, route planning and developing energy-efficient driving strategies. Although real-world EB experiments provide valuable information, they are usually a costly, time-consuming and labor-intensive process. As an alternative to practical experiments; this study proposes a high-precision, modular mathematical model to realistically simulate the energy consumption of EBs. This model has been validated with experimental data obtained from industry-standardized driving cycles and its accuracy and usefulness of adaptation to real life have been evaluated by applying it to a real scenario. A comprehensive analysis of various factors affecting the energy consumption of EBs has been conducted. These analyses provide important findings for optimizing EB operations. The model developed as a result of this study is aimed to increase the efficiency and sustainability of electric bus fleets.
