Abstract

In this study the relationship between slag composition and refractory corrosion in Thomas-type copper refining furnaces is investigated. Tbe slag components, temperature and time are considered experimental variables. Also, similar studies are conducted on alternative refractory materials to be used for this application. Experiments are carried out in two series as Group I and Group II. In Group I, the effects of synthetic slags in SiO 2-CaO-Fe 2O 3 system is investigated as 2- and 3-component compositions for magnesite-chrome 1 bricks. In Group II, corrosion studies are conducted on magnesite-chrome 2, magnesite, direct bonded magnesite-chrome and alumina cashable monolithic refractories at constant temperature and time. The penetration of Fe 2O 3-CaO system was the most extensive among 2-component systems. Also, the addition of Na 2CO 3 enhanced the attack of the 3-component system. Among alternative refractory materials, direct-bonded magnesite-chrome and alumina castable monolithic refractories showed the highest resistance to slag attack.
