Abstract

Effect of the treatment of coal with KMnO4 and SnCl2 as well as ultrasonication on its flotation and electrokinetic properties has been studied as a function of pH. Both the oxidizing agent and the reducing agent acted as depressants for coal. SnCl2 depressed coal in the pH range where precipitation occurred. Isoelectric points of both untreated and KMnO4 treated coal were around pH 6.5. Attrition by ultrasonication increased the isoelectric point to pH 6.5. No correlation was obtained between zeta potential and flotation. Ultrasonication also restored the flotation of depressed coal. Reduced flotation of coal samples is due to surface contamination possibly including, but not limited to, oxidation.
