Abstract

Transformers play a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient distribution of electrical power, enabling the conversion of energy across varying voltage levels. The design and construction of transformers must adhere to internationally recognized standards and specifications such as those established by IEEE, IEC, and EU548, while also meeting the specific requirements of customers. This study presents a comparative analysis of dry-type transformers categorized under Tier 1 and Tier 2 classifications, with a primary focus on critical factors such as load and no-load losses, cost, and overall weight. Tier 1 transformers, which are built to meet fundamental performance benchmarks, demonstrate higher losses in comparison to their Tier 2 counterparts. Tier 2 transformers, designed to conform to more stringent efficiency standards, show a notable reduction in no-load losses. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the energy efficiency disparities between the two classifications, underscoring the trade-offs between performance and cost. These results serve as a crucial resource for transformer designers, power utilities, and end-users, offering guidance in selecting the most suitable transformers based on both operational efficiency and economic considerations.
