Abstract

Hypericum perforatum (HP), generally used for antimicrobial and antioxidant purposes, is used as a medicinal, aromatic plant due to its secondary metabolite and high hyperforin content. The study aimed to determine the neurodegenerative effect of HP (in the form of HT and Hypericin) added in the form of tea in nutrition, depending on the age of the creature. For this purpose, male and female individuals of young and middle-aged (3 and 10 days old) Drosophila melanogaster were used. Weight change, movement (climbing), and biochemical stress markers (Glutathione-S-transferase, total oxidation-TOS, antioxidant level-TAS, and oxidative stress index-OSI) of the groups formed due to nutrition were evaluated. As a result, the use of HT in both males and females caused an increase in movement and weight due to aging. No change was determined in the OSI values of other groups, except for young individuals fed HT. Since the use of HT in nutrition varies depending on the gender and age of the individuals, care should be taken in its use.
