Abstract

This study presents the design and application of a portable micro hydroelectric power system for battery charging in environments where are lacking electric power networks. The system converts the kinetic energy of flowing water into electrical energy by means of a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) through a microturbine. The generated three-phase AC voltage is rectified by a low-voltage drop bridge rectifier and regulated by a closed-loop controlled buck converter and transmitted to a rechargeable battery or USB output. To overcome power fluctuations due to the water flow variation, a super-capacitor bank is placed at the output terminals. Unlike traditional hydroelectric systems, the proposed solution has a compact, lightweight and environmentally friendly structure that does not require large infrastructure, which makes it suitable for use in small streams, remote areas and tap water systems. The experimental tests conducted under real water flow conditions show that the system provides stable output voltage and appropriate charging power for mobile devices. This system offers a sustainable energy alternative for applications such as camping, emergency situations and survival in remote areas.
