Abstract
Developments in microprocessors based digital relaying have led to the digitalization of power substations. In the following years, continuous advances in digitalization and use of IEC61850 based communications technologies in the digital protection systems have led to the developments of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) and their widespread use. IEC61850 protocol has enabled IEDs produced by different vendors to work together. This interoperability provides interaction among to protection systems and control systems, and the necessary data communications during the performance of these systems. After all these developments, the idea of full automation of power networks, instead of digital substation, has emerged. This paper includes the advances in IEC61850 based substation automation, centralized protection and control based substation automation, and also discusses possible future developments in the related area.
