Abstract

The sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust, or more commonly known as an earthquake is a horrifying issue for most of the Turkish people living in Istanbul. After the quakes of 17th August and 12th November in 1999, which killed thousands of people and destroyed hundreds of residential buildings, Turkish people realized the importance of being ready for such natural disasters, but unfortunately most of the precautions that must be taken to prevent similar or even deadlier catastrophes in Istanbul have not been taken. In this paper some of these precautions will be analyzed and their importance in the eyes of the public will be decided via multi-criteria decision making systems.
