Abstract

Gamma TiAl based compacts were synthesized by hot isostatic pressing (HIP'ing) a mixture of mechanically alloyed and pre-alloyed gas atomized Ti-48Al-2Nb-2Cr powders at 850°C under 206 MPa pressure for 2 hours. Three different microstructures were produced in HIP'd compacts consisting of (a) homogeneous nanocrystalline or microcrystalline structures, when 100% mechanically alloyed or gas atomized powder respectively were used, and (b) a bimodal structure consisting of a mixture of nano-sized and micron-sized grains, when the compacts were HIP'd from a blend of the gas atomized and mechanically alloyed powders. The microstructures were studied by XRD, SEM, and TEM techniques.
