Abstract
Two of the most important factors in the design of tankers are capacity and survivability. To evaluate the influence of these factors on tanker design, engineers from the naval architecture and ocean engineering faculty of the Technical University of Istanbul, Turkey, examined various cargo and ballast tank combinations for an existing tanker to optimize the capacity without compromising safety requirements. The results are applicable to both new ships and to those being considered for alteration.
