Abstract

The investments made to meet the rising energy demand have also increased in recent years. Renewable energy systems constitute a significant part of these investments. Due to the instability of renewable energy sources, battery energy storage systems (BESS) have started to be established alongside these systems. In this way, energy can be stored when the source is high, and when it is low, the necessary energy can be drawn from the battery. At this point, efficiency has become an important issue. In this study, wind energy conversion systems (WECS) working with permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG) are supported by BESS, and the energy produced here is given to the microgrid. The study is carried out on the more efficient operation of BESS. With the perturb observe (PO) method, which is one of the maximum power point tracking methods (MPPT), more efficient operation of the battery is ensured. The model is created in MATLABSimulink for different scenarios. The model is operated for different power states demanded by the microgrid and for different scenarios. The results are examined comparatively, and the observed improvements are shown when the PO method is used.
