Abstract

This study focuses on the investigation of the effect of the blast size and blast shape on ground vibration. Site investigation was performed in an Istanbul region quarry. Thirty-seven blasts were measured and 72 ground vibration data were recorded. Length and width of the blasts were measured. Additionally, a length-width ratio was defined. Increase of the length-width ratio turns the blast shape into a long column. The decrease of ratio results in a square shape blast. Specific vibration prediction equations were developed for blast those shorter than 20 meters and longer than 35 meters. These specific equations were compared to general vibration prediction equation that was developed based on whole blast data. Twelve error measures were used to compare the equations. The equations those developed for short and long blasts show considerable promise. Length-width ratio is smaller than five for 59% of the measured blast data. A specific vibration prediction equation was developed for the blasts those length-width ratio is smaller than 5. This equation was made better predictions than general predictor equation according to seven error measures. The specific equations, which were developed based on blast size, will increase prediction capability.
