Abstract
This paper deals with the new intact stability criteria namely second generation intact stability criteria and their application. The main purpose of the second generation intact stability criteria is to assess a ship’s safety level from a robust stability point of view. However, the application of such an approach to all new vessels subject to the 2008 IS Code may not be possible due to the limited human resources and facilities required for experimental verification of numerical instruments. Therefore, the IMO advises interested parties and Member States to assess a ship’s vulnerability first using simpler criteria. Such criteria are called vulnerability criteria. For the purpose of the implementation of the criteria two ships are selected as examples. Two failure modes parametric roll and pure loss of stability have been analyzed for two levels.
