Abstract

The aim of this paper is to introduce a study which has been applied for the determination of the appropriate window type from the heating energy conservation viewpoint. The method used in this study comprises the comparison of the calculated values of the daily average hourly heat loss per unit area of building envelopes having different window types. This is related to optimum combinations of the values of the thermophysical properties and the determination of the window type which achieves the least heat loss in the underheated period. The method has been applied for windows with double-glazed wooden and plastic sashes. First, optimum combinations of the values of the thermophysical properties which define the building envelope have been determined. Second, the values of the daily average hourly heat losses per unit areas of building envelopes having different window types have been calculated and finally, related to these values, building envelopes have been compared for each window type in order to determine the window type which achieves the least heat loss.
