Abstract

Membrane-based separation has now been established as one of the staple technologies used in water/wastewater treatment and reuse applications. A membrane bioreactor system is a combination of activated sludge process and membrane technology. Using ceramic membranes in membrane bioreactors offers a good solution for the fouling problem encountered in conventional MBRs. In this chapter, after providing a brief introduction and information on historical development of ceramic MBRs, studies using ceramic membrane bioreactors for municipal wastewater and industrial wastewater treatment are summarized. This chapter will continue with an overview of solutions found in the literature for performance improvement of ceramic membrane bioreactors.
