Abstract

The main objective of this study is to assess the energy harvesting performance of a piezoelectric shunt damping treatment on the suppression of brake squeal noise. It is aimed to convert the mechanical vibrations generated during the propagation of brake squeal noise into electrical potential through the implementation of a piezoelectric element. The generated electric potential is then dissipated on a resistor that is connected in parallel to the piezoelectric element. Furthermore, the application is built on a mass-sliding belt system. First, a nonlinear two degree of freedom mathematical model of the mass-sliding belt system is developed. Hence, a nonlinear multi-physics model with two degrees of freedom is formulated. Secondly, the dynamic stability of the system is investigated numerically. Time domain solutions and their frequency domain representations are obtained. To observe the damping effect of the resistors connected in parallel to the piezoelectric element different types of resistors are utilized. Thus, the characteristics of the resistors for optimized energy harvesting and brake squeal noise suppression performance are determined. It has been verified that the system's capacity to attain the highest output voltage is enhanced by selecting an appropriate value for the external resistance. The results demonstrate the feasibility of converting vibration energy into electrical energy, particularly when the system operates in the unstable vibration regime.
