Abstract

Seismic hazard for almost half of the territory of Romania is determined by the Vrancea seismic region. During the last century few strong Vrancea earthquakes occurred in this area, the major one being in 1977, when 1,570 people died, 11,300 were injured and 32,500 residential and 763 industrial units were destroyed or were seriously damaged. Within the NERA project, ELER (Earthquake Loss Estimation Routine) software and methodology was used for the rapid estimation of earthquake shaking and losses for Romanian seismic hazard. Thus, using available Romanian data from past earthquakes the applicability of ELER for Romanian territory was assessed. The present paper presents the results in terms of intensity, pga and pgv maps for the three seismic events, using the stations records of INCERC national seismic network.
