Abstract
The quality requirements of industrial water are often not as strict as those of water for human consumption, but failure to fulfil the needs of industrial processes may result in extremely high economic impacts. Águas de Santo André (AdSA) is a Portuguese utility responsible for the industrial water supply system of the Industrial and Logistics Zone of Sines (IWSS-ILZS). This paper uses the IWSS-ILZS as a case study to test the application of a proposed value-based decision-making process for asset intensive organizations. The proposed process highlights the benefits of competing alternatives for renewing the infrastructure. It contributes to higher engagement in value-based thinking over the lifecycle of the asset base of AdSA, enabling the balancing of performance, cost and risk, and an increased alignment with corporate objectives and stakeholder needs and expectations.
