Abstract
Inadequate disposal of municipal solid waste might lead to serious environmental pollution. Its utilization as a clean energy source may achieve the aim of meeting energy demand as well as waste disposal. Thus, the treatment and disposal of municipal solid waste and determining the best disposal methods are extremely important. However, selection of the optimal waste disposal method is not only based on economic factors, energy recovery rate or volume reduction ability, but also environmental requirements. The assessment of these factors requires an intuitionistic fuzzy approach due to the existence of vague and imprecise information. Therefore, in this study, a combination of intuitionistic fuzzy sets and axiomatic design is adopted to assess waste disposal methods for Istanbul. Although landfilling is the most commonly used disposal method in Istanbul, this study shows that composting and recycling methods are more preferable.
