Abstract

Mobile devices and wireless communication have become very popular and important. Antennas are required to transfer data between wireless devices without using cable. Antenna gain, bandwidth and radiation patern etc. are some technical specifications that researchers are trying to improve. In this study, a high gain (10dBi) patch antenna used air instead of dielectric material is designed for UMTS band. It is shown that wideband antennas can be develop only by designing impedance matching part in different ways without changing gain. It is seen that they will have a wide range of applications. The designed antenna has 1900-2200 MHz bandwidth approximately which is enough to cover UMTS band. It has a rectangular strip between feed connector and radiator part. There are trapezoidal parts on both sides of the rectangular strip. A thin air gap between trapezoidal parts and radiator plane that helps impedance matching. It is designed and simulated by using well-known commercial EM simulation software package, HFSS. Detailed configuration, simulated return loss and radiation patern of the antenna are presented.
