Aero-acoustics of vehicle side mirrors

Abstract

The dominating noise of a ground vehicle traveling at speeds above 120 km/h is generated by the aerodynamic mechanisms. The main noise sources of such a ground vehicle are front pillar, under body, side mirror and ventilation channels. In this paper, the unsteady flow field around two different side mirrors, namely those of Renault 9-Broadway and Volvo S 40, and their contribution to the noise propagation are investigated. The CAD data of the side mirrors is generated using a three-dimensional digitizer. A Commercial software package's Non Linear Acoustics Solver is used to predict the radiated sound from the side mirrors. First, average turbulence properties are determined using RANS computations. Then, for the acoustic analysis initial RANS mesh is cropped closer to mirror to construct the acoustic mesh. At the cropped boundaries the far-field absorbing boundary conditions are used to prevent acoustic wave reflections. Sound pressure levels are determined in four locations. Overall, the newer Volvo S40 mirror gave lower sound pressure levels.
