Abstract
The demand on distributed generation and specifically photovoltaics (PV) has increased rapidly in the last decade. Connecting these sources to distribution network level creates new challenges that where not experienced before. In this paper, the potential impacts of photovoltaics integration into distribution network on protection system are investigated using IEEE 33-bus test distribution system. Several phase fault cases are simulated in DIgSILENT Power Factory environment with different PV connection configuration; to address their effects on conventional protection system. Distance relays coordination method is proposed as a dynamic solution to accommodate the effects of distributed generation on phase protection system. The feasibility of the suggested solution is verified by reapplying the same fault conditions considered earlier.
