Abstract

Confectionery industry has a great importance in terms of having a high potential of organic pollution. Its wastewater therefore requires several stages of treatment to reach given discharge standards. In this study, the chemical and biological treatability of a confectionery plants wastewater is investigated. Chemical treatment using inorganic coagulants provided 24-54% COD removal. A lab-scale fill and draw activated sludge system fed with chemically treated wastewater at several organic loading resulted in over 96% COD removal.
