Abstract

Creativity is a natural activity of the human mind. Tools, systems and environments can be facilitated to support creativity. This study proposes an InSpace system that inspires the creative process regarding text-based idea representations in the spatial design domain. In addition to customary idea visualization approaches such as mood boards and mind maps, the system is novel and developing through ongoing research regarding human-computer interactions (HCI) powered by artificial intelligence (AI). To propose a system allowing cognitive flexibility and establishing an incremental process in the early stages of the spatial design process, use-case-driven methods are adopted, and graphical user interface (GUI) mockups are produced via Figma. Participants from the spatial design domain test the system. It is evaluated through usability heuristics for user interface (UI) and comparative analysis based on the creativity support index (CSI). InSpace showed better performance in exploration, enjoyment and expressiveness factors of creativity support based on the CSI of participants. Based on these results, InSpace has the potential to support exploration and assist the iterative process in the early stages of spatial design.
