Abstract

In this study, Mechanical Alloying of elemental iron and graphite powders were carried out using different milling media in a high energy attritor mill. For this purpose, the composition 95wt%Fe-5wt%C was chosen and constituted by elemental Fe and C powders. Several batches of this composition was attrition milled for 90 minutes in air, Ar gas and ethylene alcohol solutions. Following characterization investigations of mechanical alloyed powders by X-ray diffraction and powder particle size analyses, consolidation in a uniaxial press and sintering at 1080°C for 1 hour in a cracked ammonia atmosphere was performed. Microhardness, density and scanning electtron microscope characterizations were performed on the sintered samples.
