Abstract
The development of plants in rice fields has been monitored for years with remote sensing. The current trend in remote sensing research is towards precision agriculture, which aims to provide vitality information of plants in meter-scale resolution. Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) plays a significant role in rice monitoring by relating the plant morphology to scattering behavior of electromagnetic waves. This relation can be used to improve rice monitoring applications by making the estimation of detailed plant morphology possible. In this study, we present the stochastic optimization of a metamodel-driven electromagnetic scattering model. This study involves the estimation accuracies for stalk height, leaf length and leaf width using co-polar TerraSAR-X data. The results that have been obtained are found to be successful for stalk height and leaf length with R2 higher than 0.78 from the in-situ measured values.
