Abstract

The purpose of the mine ventilation system is to provide adequate fresh air to dilute and remove contaminants to safe levels in all parts of the mine where mine personnel and equipment travel and work. Underground mines are continually expanding in size and depth in order to reach new production zones over the years due to the depletion of easily accessible reserves. This makes the mine ventilation network larger and more complex, making fresh air distribution and management of the ventilation network challenging and energy-intensive. In this context, it has been investigated whether the Çayeli Bakır Copper and Zinc mine ventilation system, which is an operation of approximately 30 years, can be operated more efficiently and whether the energy consumption and related operating costs due to ventilation can be reduced. Ventilation surveys were conducted to assess the mine's current ventilation system and plan for future requirements. These studies include measurements of air velocity, cross-sectional area, pressure difference, fan performance and psychrometric properties of air. In order to optimize the ventilation system, a computer-based model of the mine ventilation system was created and calibrated with the results obtained from the measurements. With the obtained results, a comparison of the existing ventilation system with the proposed systems was made, considering the fresh air requirement, fan performance, efficiency and energy consumption of the mine.
